early career positions in science and administration

The Allen Institute offers science-focused and administrative internships designed to enable people from all backgrounds to launch their career in a space where they are valued and included. We do this with an eye towards our future research community and the highest impact for our participants.

ASPIRE Internship Program: A year-long postbaccalaureate internship

In 2025, we introduced the the Advancing Scientific Potential through Internships, Research, and Education (ASPIRE) Internship program. ASPIRE is a year-long postbaccalaureate internship designed to provide mentorship and on-the-job experience for those who have recently completed a bachelor’s degree and are interested in pursuing advanced STEM education or a career in life sciences research, science-support, or other STEM-related administrative careers.

Applications for ASPIRE Internship positions starting in Summer 2026 are now closed. We expect applications to open for our Summer 2027 cohort in December of 2026.

Through the ASPIRE Internship program, interns will learn and gain experience working for an organization dedicated to Big, Team, and Open science. This can include participating in research that can lead to publications and presentations as well as contributing to an overall scientific mission through administrative or technology roles.

Each intern will own a project that seeks to address a specific research question, scientific problem, or administrative challenge, and they will be paired with a primary mentor who will assist the intern in their career development and help bring them into the Allen Institute community. New interns will start their roles in June or July and wrap up with a capstone presentation the following May.

Applicants must earn their bachelor’s degree prior to the start of the program, and no earlier than December 1, 2023. While most projects do not require prior experience, please review the specific role’s Required Education and Experience before applying.

We occasionally offer internship roles outside of the ASPIRE Internship program. Timeline, eligibility, and specifics for each of these internship roles will be included in the Job Description.
