our research
Exploring the brain’s activity, at the level of individual neurons and the whole brain, to reveal how we interpret our environments to make decisions.
explore open science
Scientist wearing glasses examining laboratory equipment in a bright lab setting
The most important scientific questions rarely have quick answers. That's why we pursue large-scale projects we call accelerators to generate foundational knowledge and tools that move entire fields forward — and share everything we build openly with the world.
Two women examining advanced optical equipment and technology in modern laboratory setting

one institute, many interconnected questions

Our accelerators span scientific fields and disciplines, but they don't operate in isolation. Discoveries in one area illuminate questions in another, and our multidisciplinary teams work across boundaries. Each program runs ambitious projects with defined outcomes, generating data, tools, and knowledge shared freely with the global scientific community. This is how we accelerate discovery — not just here, but everywhere.

science done differently. shared with the world.

explore our accelerators

brain science

Mapping every cell, connection, and circuit in the brain—openly shared with the world.

cell science

Decoding how cells become tissues, then programming that knowledge into powerful new research tools.

neural dynamics

Revealing the brain's hidden algorithms that transform neural activity into real-world behavior.

immunology

Creating the deepest open reference for the healthy human immune system ever built.

synthetic biology

Engineering cells to record their own histories, transforming how we understand disease over time.

2023 Spring Teacher Academy: Open Neuroscience Data Workshop
At the Allen Institute, we believe teachers are our greatest allies in making open science accessible to the next generation of scientists. We invite you for a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with cutting edge researchers here at Allen to expand your science teaching toolbox to include topics in neuroscience, open science, STEM career pathways, and more. Join us! This workshop is geared towards middle and high school life science teachers at any stage in their career who are interested in using open data resources in their classrooms, touring state-of-the-art science labs, and connecting with local scientists.  Teachers across the Puget Sound region who are able to travel to the Allen Institute in South Lake Union at 4:00 pm on March 22 and March 29, 2023 are invited to apply. Applications were due on March 6, 2023 . Applications are now closed. Contact education@alleninstitstg.wpengine.com with questions.

FUN at the Allen Institute
Thank you for joining us before the FUN Workshop to explore the Allen Institute's open resources. At this event, you’ll learn about our current research and educational offerings, tour some of our labs, and participate in a hands-on demo of a curriculum unit designed for undergraduate neuroscience that uses open scientific data from the Allen Institute.

Open Science Sticker Contest
What does open science mean to you? To celebrate 20 years of open science at the Allen Institute, we are seeking creative answers in the form of artwork from youth ages 5-14. Enter the Open Science Sticker Contest by 12:00pm (Pacific), on August 1, 2023. To celebrate 20 years of open science at the Allen Institute, we are seeking creative answers in the form of hand-drawn artwork or a digital design.
