2023 Spring Teacher Academy: Open Neuroscience Data Workshop

At the Allen Institute, we believe teachers are our greatest allies in making open science accessible to the next generation of scientists. We invite you for a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with cutting edge researchers here at Allen to expand your science teaching toolbox to include topics in neuroscience, open science, STEM career pathways, and more. Join us! This workshop is geared towards middle and high school life science teachers at any stage in their career who are interested in using open data resources in their classrooms, touring state-of-the-art science labs, and connecting with local scientists.  Teachers across the Puget Sound region who are able to travel to the Allen Institute in South Lake Union at 4:00 pm on March 22 and March 29, 2023 are invited to apply. About This Event

Workshop key highlights

  • Locate, navigate, and describe key neuroscience data resources from the Allen Institute to share with students and colleagues
  • Interact with experts to gain knowledge in the fundamentals of neuroscience and stay current in emerging research
  • Identify potential research questions related to Allen Institute data that can be used for independent student projects
  • Access user forums to ask questions between sessions and after the workshop.
  • Tour Allen Institute’s state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and collaboration spaces
  • Participate in an engaging career panel discussion and discover a myriad of career pathways in science to share with students

Workshop Dates: Wednesday March 22 and Wednesday March 29 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm

Location: Allen Institute, 615 Westlake Avenue N. Seattle, WA 98109. Parking in our Roy St. parking garage will be validated on both dates.

Program Benefits: Participants will receive a $200 stipend award upon completion of this professional development experience. Participants may also purchase 5 STEM clock hours through Washington Science Teachers Association.

Applicant notification: All applicants will be notified of the decision on their applications by March 8, 2023.

The Allen Institute offers a wide variety of teacher resources and programming on alleninstitute.org/education. A longer multi-day Teacher Academy focusing on our Cell Science open data will be held in August. Teachers may apply to both sessions.

What does open science mean to you? To celebrate 20 years of open science at the Allen Institute, we are seeking creative answers in the form of artwork from youth ages 5-14. Enter the Open Science Sticker Contest by 12:00pm (Pacific), on August 1, 2023. To celebrate 20 years of open science at the Allen Institute, we are seeking creative answers in the form of hand-drawn artwork or a digital design.

Attendee Details: Fundamentals of Neuroscience Virtual Teacher Academy
At this teacher academy, attendees will have the opportunity to learn from neuroscientists, explore open data, attend a live virtual lab tour, and ask questions to scientists on a panel. This workshop takes place across 2 required sessions on February 27, 2024 and March 5, 2024 from 4:00 pm PST until 5:30 pm PST.
