schedule

key dates:

August 22 | Optional Python Bootcamp to provide a basic introduction to Python as a language as well as using Python-based tools for scientific computation: numpy, pandas, matplotlib, and others. This bootcamp will be an all day event at the Allen Institute.

If you have not used Python before, we strongly recommend reviewing (one or more of) the following resources. ahead of the bootcamp:

  • Code Academy: https://www.codecademy.com/learn/learn-python-3
  • Google Python Course: https://developers.google.com/edu/python/
  • Corey Schafer’s YouTube Series on Python: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL-osiE80TeTt2d9bfVyTiXJA-UTHn6WwU

August 23 | Optional Neuro Bootcamp will provide an introduction to the field of Neuroscience, covering the types of questions and tools employed in the field. This bootcamp will take place on Sunday, August 23rd (morning) at the Allen Institute.

August 23 – September 6 | Main Workshop – bus departs for Anacortes on the 23rd (exact time TBA).

Week 1 is focused on hands-on tutorials and instructions centered around specific families of scientific questions. By the end of Week 1 students will have formed groups aimed at a scientific project. They will present this idea at the end of the week. Each day will roughly follow the schedule below:

  • Breakfast
  • Morning Lecture(s)
  • Workshop Session 1
  • Lunch
  • Workshop Session 2
  • Open Work Time
  • Dinner
  • Group Activity

Week 2 is focused on applying materials and skillsets to the collaborative group project formed during Week 1. Each day will roughly follow the schedule below:

  • Breakfast
  • 2 Morning Guest Lectures
  • Lunch
  • Open Work Time
  • Dinner
  • Open Work Time

September 6 | Bus returns to UW campus.

travel

You are responsible for arranging transportation to the University of Washington dorms, if you are staying there on the nights of August 21 and/or 22, or to the bus pickup point on August 23 if not.

If you have requested housing at UW on August 21, August 22, and/or September 6, you will check in at the dorm. Follow the directions in your email for check in procedures. Check-in time is between noon and 10pm on August 21 and check-out is before 11am on August 23.

The workshop provides transportation from Seattle to Friday Harbor. The bus from Seattle will depart from the Allen Institute to the Anacortes ferry terminal on Sunday, August 23. We will provide group walk on ferry tickets.

At the end of the workshop, the bus will return to the UW campus by 3pm. You are responsible for arranging transportation back to the airport.

Airport to the University of Washington dorms: A cab or rideshare from the airport typically costs $60-90 and takes about 30 minutes at off-peak hours. The Link light rail travels directly from the airport to the University District station and takes about an hour. (Note that you are looking for the University District station, not the University of Washington station located at the stadium, or the University Street station located downtown.)

University of Washington dorms to Allen Institute: A cab or rideshare takes about 15 minutes and typically costs ~$25. We will provide an Uber code (to come) for a free ride from UW to the Allen Institute. Alternatively, Metro bus route 70 travels from NE 43rd and 15th, about 3 blocks from the dorms, to about 4 blocks from the Allen Institute. It takes about 35 minutes including walking time and costs $2.75. Follow directions here.

Allen Institute (Bootcamp and bus to Anacortes departure): 615 Westlake Ave N, Seattle, WA, 98109. Note that the loading zone is on the north side of the building on Roy St. If you are attending the bootcamp on Sunday, enter at the front door at the corner of Westlake and Roy/Valley and follow signs to the 2nd floor. If you are only taking the bus and not participating in bootcamp, wait in the lobby to meet the rest of the group before departure.

*Anyone not traveling with the group to FHL will be responsible for all travel costs incurred

workshop facilities

At Friday Harbor Labs, most lectures are held in the Commons, students stay in the Dorms, and meals are held in the Dining Hall. The Dining Hall and Commons both have patio spaces and indoor areas that are well ventilated.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are provided by FHL on weekdays; brunch and dinner are provided on weekends. FHL will do their best to accommodate all requested dietary restrictions. Students are responsible for their own snacks.

To request fresh linens and towels, email Lee Ann at walchl@uw.edu by Thursday afternoon with a list of the specific new linens you need. The linens will be stacked in the laundry room on Friday morning and labeled with your name. New linens are only available on Friday mornings. The laundry room is accessible for student laundry 24/7. You must bring your own detergent and quarters for the laundry machine.

Instructors and TAs only: If you are departing before the end of the workshop, on the morning of your departure, please take out your garbage and take all sheets and towels to the laundry room. Please make sure that you are not in your unit from 9-10am for housekeeping to deliver linens for the next occupant, but you can leave your bags there until check out time.

software and code

The workshop uses Slack, GitHub, CodeOcean, and Python as our primary software tools. In your RSVP survey, you gave us your Slack and GitHub email addresses, and you will receive invitations to join both spaces by August 14th.

We strongly recommend downloading the Slack desktop and/or mobile app rather than using the web interface. On GitHub, we will add you as a collaborator to the workshop repository. Please follow the instructions on the Course Preparation page to set up Python on your machine before arriving. The course schedule will also be posted and updated on GitHub.

suggested packing list

FHL is a rustic facility spread over multiple buildings with many outdoor spaces and is located right on the water of Puget Sound. Weather in August is typically in the mid 70s F/mid 20s C during the day and low 50s F/low 10s C overnight. Rain is infrequent in August, but it can be windy. Indoor spaces can get warm during the day, and both indoor and outdoor spaces are often cold at night. Recommended items to pack suggested by past participants and staff include:

  • Face masks (N95 masks will also protect against smoke – August/September is fire season)
  • Rapid covid tests (optional)
  • Flashlight
  • Travel mug (coffee and tea are available 24 hours)
  • Water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Blanket or towel for sitting outside
  • Baseball cap/hat
  • Bug spray
  • Shower shoes
  • Shower caddy (dorm-style bathrooms)
  • Power strip/splitter for dorm room (limited outlets in some rooms)
  • Fleece jacket/sweatshirt
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Card or board games for down time
  • Activewear – many students run, do yoga, or even swim in Puget Sound during down time

FHL provides linens and towels for dorm rooms. Coin-operated laundry facilities are available 24/7 on site. The town of Friday Harbor is about one mile away and has a pharmacy, a grocery store, and small clothing stores.

safety and health Protocols

We no longer have mandatory covid protocols. Masks and rapid tests will not be provided but are encouraged on the packing list.
