About This Event

Join us at the Allen Institute for the 2023 Cell Science Teacher Academy!

  • Deadline extended! Apply by May 23, 2023at 10 pm PST
  • Three days of in-person workshops will take place in Seattle, WA, on August 9-11

This workshop is open to high school life science and pre-service teachers who are interested in enhancing their cell biology instruction to include research-grade human cell image data. Educators will collaborate with scientists to learn how to engage students in opportunities to explore variation in cell shape, structure, and function using tools from allencell.org.

Contact education@alleninstitute.org with questions.

Dates: August 9-11, 2023 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm

Location: Allen Institute, 615 Westlake Avenue N. Seattle, WA 98109. Parking in our Roy St. parking garage will be validated each day.

Workshop Key Highlights:

  • Use our open data resources and technology tools in their classrooms including our Cell Feature Explorer, Visual Guide to Human Cells, and Integrated Mitotic Stem Cell to communicate disciplinary core ideas about cell structure and function, growth, specialization, and differentiation
  • Incorporate Allen Institute lessons aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) into teaching, including Mitosis and Microscopy and new lessons in development using our cell biology data.
  • Collaborate with science staff and other teachers to explore curriculum resources suitable for diverse audiences.
  • Explore career options in STEM and cell biology as well as science-adjacent careers at the Allen Institute through panel participation and career curriculum resource sharing
  • Engage in talks and Q&A sessions with scientific staff to learn about developments in cell biology and stay current in your content knowledge

Requirements:

  • Applicant must be able to attend three days of in-person workshops, August 9- 11, 2023 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, in Seattle, WA
  • Applicant must be currently employed and teaching a biological or life science course (life science electives, CTE, etc) or be a pre-service teacher interested in teaching life science.

Teachers who reside outside of the Seattle area or outside of Washington are welcome to apply if you are able to travel to Seattle. There is not a virtual or hybrid option. We have secured a hotel block a short walk from the Institute at EVEN Hotel that you are welcome to utilize.

Program Benefits: Participants will receive a $600 stipend award upon completion of this professional development experience. Teachers in Washington may also purchase 16 STEM clock hours through Washington Science Teachers Association.

Applicant notification: All applicants will be notified of the decision on their applications by May 30, 2023.
