TReND CaMinA empowering the next generation of scientists in Africa
This year’s TReND CaMinA runs from July 7-12 at Lusaka, Zambia
By Peter Kim
Last August, around 20 graduate and undergraduate students gathered in Kigali, Rwanda to take part in a computational neuroscience and machine learning program called TReND CaMinA (Computational Neuroscience and Machine Learning in Africa)
The program was aimed at training the next generation of scientists in cutting-edge tools and technologies and supporting STEM eduction in Africa.
Scientists from the Allen Institute travelled to Rwanda to help teach the course using real-world neuroscience data from the Allen Brain Observatory.
This innovative educational opportunity is organized by TReND in Africa (Teaching and Research in Natural Sciences for Development in Africa).
“Working with the Allen Institute’s data sets provided an invaluable opportunity to apply advanced data analysis techniques to real-world neuroscience problems, leading to meaningful discoveries about brain function and organization.” —Vincent Ogwal, Student
This year, the Allen Institute will also be supporting the program. The 2025 workshop will be at the University of Zambia in Lusaka, Zambia
Registration is open until January 31, 2025
“Working with the Allen Institute team enriches our course and has a positive impact on our student’s careers and on the dissemination of computational neuroscience and machine learning skills across Africa.”
—Artemis Koumoundourou, Ph.D., executive director of TReND in Africa
