Allen Institute Teacher Fellows

Program Details

Fellowship MilestonesAttend the in-person kickoff workshop at the Allen Institute in Seattle, WA, August 12-13, 2024Work in a group with other teachers to co-create and publish a novel neuroscience lessonPilot and evaluate lesson with students during the 2024 – 2025 school yearAttend four virtual meetings throughout the 2024 – 2025 school year for continued development of lessonsAgree to share the lesson in an open access format with other teachers by publishing the final lesson within the Allen Institute Education Materials Library

The Allen Institute’s Education & Engagement team invites high school STEM teachers in Washington, Idaho, or Oregon to apply for our inaugural Allen Institute Teacher Fellows cohort. This program supports high school STEM educators to co-create a new lesson for their students using scientific resources from the Allen Institute. Teachers will apply to join a cohort of peer educators who will spend the year-long fellowship working together with Allen Institute scientists and Education & Engagement staff to co-create, pilot, and publish a unique neuroscience lesson for their class. Teachers will work in groups to write their lessons and will be paired with a scientific mentor from the Allen Institute to help guide the development of the lessons. The deadline for to apply for our 2024 – 2025 cohort has passed.

Open science can be a powerful tool for equitable access to science learning and research experiences. We are seeking teachers who are committed to developing culturally relevant science curricula and fostering inclusive STEM learning environments.

Eligibility requirements:

    • Current high school STEM teacher in Washington, Oregon, or Idaho who will be actively teaching during the 2024 – 2025 school year
    • Have at least 2 years of teaching experience in your STEM discipline

Teacher Fellows will receive:

    • A $1500 stipend (two payments of $750) as compensation for time and effort spent writing, piloting, and publishing the lesson
    • Up to 20 STEM clock hours for Washington State participants. At this time, we aren’t able to provide clock hours for participants from Idaho or Oregon.
    • Reimbursement of up to $1000 for travel-related expenses (with receipts) incurred while traveling to Seattle for the in-person August 12-13, 2024 workshop. This could include reimbursement for gas, hotel accommodations, etc.

At the Allen Institute, we believe teachers are our greatest allies in making open science accessible to the next generation of scientists. We invite you for a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with cutting edge researchers here at Allen to expand your science teaching toolbox to include topics in neuroscience, open science, STEM career pathways, and more. Join us! This workshop is geared towards middle and high school life science teachers at any stage in their career who are interested in using open data resources in their classrooms, touring state-of-the-art science labs, and connecting with local scientists.  Teachers across the Puget Sound region who are able to travel to the Allen Institute in South Lake Union at 4:00 pm on March 22 and March 29, 2023 are invited to apply. Attendee Details: Fundamentals of Neuroscience Virtual Teacher Academy
At this teacher academy, attendees will have the opportunity to learn from neuroscientists, explore open data, attend a live virtual lab tour, and ask questions to scientists on a panel. This workshop takes place across 2 required sessions on February 27, 2024 and March 5, 2024 from 4:00 pm PST until 5:30 pm PST.
